Summary Information
Waste is an essential service provided by Local Governments. In the metropolitan area and some larger non-metropolitan areas, Regional Councils manage waste on behalf of a collective of Local Governments. The power to establish Regional Councils comes from the Local Government Act 1995. In most non-metropolitan areas Local Government’s are responsible for their individual waste management needs. This includes; collection of waste and recyclables through regular waste collection services, kerbside collections and skin bin provisions; the management of landfills; and in some cases operation of recycling facilities. Local Government’s also have the option of contracting out their waste services.
